Viostream calculates its video engagement scores with a two-part equation:

  1. First, multiply the total number of plays by the duration of the video in minutes.
  2. Second, divide the first number by the total minutes watched.

To help you understand this calculation process, let's use an example:

Your 7-minute video has been viewed 1,203 times, with a total view time 5,600 minutes. When we multiply the total number of plays (1,203) by the duration of the video (7), we get 8,421. This is the number of potential view minutes if all 1,203 viewers had viewed all 7 minutes of the video. When we divide that number by the actual view minutes (5,600), we get a video engagement score of 1.5.

If the video had been watched all the way through every time, the number of actual view minutes would have also been 8,421, which would give us a video engagement score of 1--the highest score possible.

A "perfect" score is extremely rare and hardly ever permanent, so don't get discouraged if you don't get there. Just be aware that the closer a video's engagement score is to 1, the better it is likely performing, though we recommend utilizing the rest of Viostream's analytic tools to verify that.
